The Mission

The Mission of the Advancements in Medicine Conference is to provide an annual international forum through which medical and healthcare professionals in Jamaica and those from other parts of the world can meet and exchange information on current developments in medicine and help identify and implement solutions that will lead to improvements in the healthcare delivery system of Jamaica.

In keeping with this mission members of the Jamaican Diaspora and others Friends of Jamaica have been identified to serve as Hospital Liaisons.  The goal is to identify team of a minimum of four healthcare professionals (one from USA, one from Canada, one from UK and one from Jamaica) who will help to identify, prioritize and manage the efforts to implement measures to improve the healthcare delivery system of their respective hospitals.  These Hospital Liaison team will assist the conference planning team to identify relevant topics for lecture, workshops seminars and prepare cases for review.

The Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1.      Assess current research in the prevention and management of non- communicable chronic diseases such as hypertension, cancer and others.

2.      Make management decisions in demyelinating disorders such as stroke, other neurological disorders based on recent advances.

3.      Discuss and implement the use of recent information technology in improving the level of healthcare delivered in hospitals and private clinics.

4.      Display practical application of research information in some areas of emergency medicine.

5.      Improve their delivery of care in various areas of female health based on current knowledge.

6.      Evaluate new thinking on topics in the area of pediatrics, surgery and public health with a view to implementing in practice.

7.      Develop a framework for collaborative clinical research and grant writing

8.      Evaluate new thinking on topics in the area of dentistry with a view to implementing in practice.

9.      Evaluate new thinking on topics in the area of specialize nursing with a view to implementing in practice.

 

Beginning with AIM&H2013 efforts will be made to develop focus teams consisting or representatives from the Ministry of Health, the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Technology, the Jamaican Diaspora and Friends of Jamaica, and participating overseas institutions.  The following are key focus teams schedule for formation at this years conference:

Registration Deadlines
 1. The deadline for early registration is March 31, 2013.
 2. Late registration closes April 15, 2013
 
 ON-SITE REGISTRATION
 On-site late registration will be available 8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. at the external sessions and conference site. On-site registration must be accompanied with payment by a major credit card, check or cash. This is a LIMITED registration at a greatly increased rate and OSDJ does not guarantee that tickets to events, materials, welcome bags or other opportunities will be available to those who do NOT register by April 15, 2013.
 
REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION
Upon receipt of your registration payment, OSDJ will e-mail you a registration confirmation. All subsequent updates will be sent via email. Please keep your email address current with OSDJ.

 

CANCELLATION POLICY

Registrants who are unable to attend the conference will receive a refund less a $60 administrative fee if a written cancellation is received by April 15, 2013. Cancellations must be emailed to osdj@aol.com No refunds will be granted after April 15, 2013. OSDJ reserves the right to cancel any program and assumes no responsibility for personal expense.

Tax Deductible Contributions
It is our desire to make the conference affordable to as many local as possible. However many of the nurses in rural Jamaica and students may not be able to afford the cost of registration, transportation and accommodation. To contribute to the registration cost of local nurses or students please include the amount as part of your registration payment.

 

OSDJ is a 501(c) (3) corporation registered in the State of Minnesota. Contributions made to provide scholarships to local students and nurses to attend the conference are tax-deductible.

Accomodations

From April 22 - 23 accommodations will be at recommended hotels in close proximity to the outreach hospital site.  Daily shuttle will be provided to and from the hotel and the hospital. For More information of the outreach site accommodation visit the outreach site link above.

 

In Kingston the recommended sites include; The Pegasus Hotel, Courtleigh Hotel, Wyndham Hotel and Knutsford Court Hotel.  There will be daily shuttles to the University of the West Indies.  Reservations for accommodations in Kingston can be made as part of the registration process.

 

Air Travels

It is recommended that oversea attendee fly in and out of the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.   Thos wishing to fly into the Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay,  The is an express bus shuttle service, the Knutsford Shuttle that runs from Montego Bay to Kingston.
